Following over two dozen different people in the almost wordless atmosphere of a dark night in a Brussels town, Akerman examines acception and rejection in the realm of romance.

The director at the forefront of the post-war gender debate was already present in only the third year of the Info-Schau with this film. Virtuoso atmospheres between people and things, between spirit and world and time and space distinguish the work of this passionate artist who took her own life in October 2015. Panorama is screening two films in tribute to Chantal Akerman: alongside Toute une nuit, her debut from 1974, the radical Je, tu, il, elle (I, You, He, She).

BIOGRAFIE Chantal Akerman

Born in Brussels in 1950 as the daughter of Polish-Jewish immigrants, she died in Paris in 2015. Many of her films take Jewish life
after the Holocaust as their subject. With her 1975 work JEANNE DIELMAN, 23 QUAI DU COMMERCE, 1080 BRUXELLES she also positioned herself as a filmmaker of the feminist avant-garde. Her filmography of almost 50 titles attracted many contemporary admirers including US director Gus van Sant and her work screened frequently at the Berlinale.
